It seems somewhat keto-friendly with the vegetables and mayo, but the added refined sugar or an apple to sweeten it up can raise the carb count quickly.

According to Culinarylore.com, the word coleslaw came from the Dutch term koolsla, meaning cabbage salad. Kool is the Dutch word for cabbage and sla is a Dutch abbreviation of the word salade.

During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Dutch settlers landed in New York, and brought with them their recipe for chilled cabbage salad, which today is known as coleslaw.

It depends on the ingredients, but traditional coleslaw has 7-10 carbs, depending on the amount of sugar added. 

Some coleslaw also contains apples, which can increase the carbs.

What Ingredients are in The Best Keto Coleslaw?

You can shred your own cabbage, using this neat vegetable shredder/slicer, or buy the coleslaw mix already shredded in the produce area.

Sometimes I can find organic already shredded, but if not, I go with the regular slaw mix.

Using a mayo with avocado oil and very few clean ingredients is so much better for you. I will only use Primal Kitchen brand for this reason.

Regular mayos usually contain soy oil, canola or vegetable oil which can disrupt your thyroid and/or hormones

Does This Best Keto Coleslaw Have Vinegar in it?

I prefer the taste of the coleslaw without vinegar, but you if you like it, add away!

If desired, add 1 Tablespoon Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar to the recipe.

I prefer Bragg vinegar because it is organic and has the “mother” in the bottom of the bottle.

TIP: Be sure and shake the bottle well before adding to your Best Keto Coleslaw recipe to ensure you are getting all the wonderful nutrients.

Best Keto Cole Slaw

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Coleslaw mix Green, purple cabbage and carrots shredded
  • 2 tbsp Mayo with avocado oil
  • 1 tsp Dijon or spicy mustard
  • 1 tbsp Heavy whipping cream If non dairy, replace with 1 T Mayo
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Monk Fruit Drops

Instructions
 

  • Pace ingredients in a small mixing bowl
  • Mix all together well
  • Chill until ready to serve
  • Enjoy!
