Traditional Hot Chocolate

sugar free best keto hot chocolate cocoa

The history of hot chocolate goes WAY back. According to Wikepedia, it was first introduced by the Maya around 2,500–3,000 years ago, and a similar drink was part of Aztec culture by 1400 AD.

Traditional hot chocolate is made with cow's milk and has 12 carbs per serving, definitely not low carb and Keto friendly.

Marshmallows are a traditional topping for hot chocolate, but they are high in carbs and sugar as well.

Just 1 cup of miniature marshmallows has 41 carbs and 29 grams of sugar – WHAT?  That's more than a day's worth of carbs and sugar intake!

Save the carbs and top this recipe with this yummy Sugar Free Whipped Cream and some ChocZero Chocolate Syrup!

Sugar is the number one cause of inflammation which is the root of most disease, including autoimmune issues, diabetes and heart disease.  You can read more about the dangers of sugar and learning to live with out it in Sugar And Heart Disease.

Best Sugar Substitute for Sugar Free Hot Chocolate

This recipe uses powdered erythritol because it gives it a lighter feel and is less grainy.  Sometimes it is hard to find in stores so you can use this link to order from Amazon.

This recipe calls for 4 tablespoons of erythritol, but I like things sweet.  You might try 3 to start and add as you taste.

You could also use liquid Monk Fruit, it will just have a little bit different texture.
